A group of armed men has broken into a hospital run by the NGO Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, to take a patient with gunshot wounds while in the operating room, according to the organization itself, which has confirmed the suspension of activities in this center for security reasons.
The assault took place on Thursday night in a hospital located in the Tabarre area. Initially, two men arrived at the facilities feigning an emergency and, once the doors were open, regarding twenty people with their faces covered entered to take another patient who had previously arrived with serious injuries.
“How are we supposed to be able to continue providing assistance in this context?” asked the director of MSF programs in Haiti, Mahamad Bachard Iro, who has denounced an absolute lack of respect for human life in the midst of an escalation of violence, without taking into account “vulnerable, sick or injured” people.
Iro has confirmed that the suspension of activities for a while, pending evaluation of the conditions for a possible reopening, and has indicated that the assailants threatened to kill the workers themselves, who need “some respite.” This is not the first time, since MSF has already been forced to temporarily or permanently cancel care at other clinics, despite maintaining its commitment to continue helping the Haitian population.
The UN estimates that 5.2 million people, including almost three million children, are in need of humanitarian aid, while 4.9 million suffer from food insecurity. The violence, which is especially rampant in Port-au-Prince, has caused the displacement of almost 128,000 people and continues to add victims daily — since April, more than 260 murders of suspected gang members have been documented.
