“Both my parents are old and sick and I never let my daughter go out to look for food. I used to go to the soldiers and that was the only way to get food,” said one of the victims. The woman said she was forced to have sex with soldiers at a meat processing plant last May, shortly after Sudan’s devastating civil war broke out between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force – and then again this January at a warehouse which stored fava beans.
According to the United Nations, the conflict in Sudan has left tens of thousands dead and displaced more than 10 million people. A recent United Nations-backed report said nearly 26 million people, or just over half the population, face high levels of “acute food insecurity.”
Some of the women who spoke to the Guardian said the soldiers also demand sex in exchange for access to abandoned houses where it is still possible to loot items to sell in local markets. One woman said that after having sex with the soldiers she was allowed to take food, kitchen equipment and perfumes from empty houses. She spoke of her shame at being sexually assaulted and being forced to steal property to survive.
“I am not a thief,” she said. “What I went through is indescribable, I wouldn’t wish it on any enemy. I only did it because I wanted to feed my children,” he said.
A third woman the Guardian spoke to said she was tortured by soldiers because she stopped having sex with them. The 21-year-old said she had had sex with soldiers in exchange for being allowed to loot houses in western Omdurman, but that she stopped when her siblings told her they were against looting. The woman told the soldiers that she would no longer come to see them, and two of them burned her feet.
One soldier stated that although he had never personally exploited women, he had seen his colleagues do so. She described an incident where a woman had sex with soldiers, who in turn allowed her sisters to loot houses. “It’s awful,” said the soldier. “The magnitude of the sins in this city can never be forgiven.”
