A 53-year-old man in Hanoi City, Vietnam, had a large amount of nasal discharge for an unknown reason for a long time. No matter how hard his family persuaded him, they could not persuade him to go to the hospital for a check-up. Later, his condition worsened and his nasal cavity was suspected to be infected, red and smelly. He had to be taken to a local hospital for treatment. After examination, the doctor discovered that there were a large number of maggots in his nasal cavity, which was quite scary.

According to Vietnamese media reports, a man in Hanoi City had a large amount of mucus in his nasal cavity for a long time and had a bad smell. It is understood that the man originally suffered from sinusitis. Later, the nasal tissue was suspected to be eroded and severely rotted. As a result, he also had difficulty breathing and swelling around the nose and face.

Seeing that the situation was not optimistic, his family encouraged and persuaded him to go to the hospital for examination, but he refused to cooperate. Later, the man had a nasal infection, which was accompanied by redness and odor, so his family took him to Lao Cai Provincial General Hospital for treatment.

The man underwent an endoscopic examination and more than 100 live maggots were removed and the man’s nasal cavity was cleaned at the same time. After the maggots were successfully removed, the man’s health has stabilized and he continues to receive observation and treatment. Further examination by the doctor found that there were many maggots nesting in the man’s left nasal cavity, while the right nasal cavity was in a state of atrophic mucosa and scabbing.

Doctors point out that maggots grow very quickly, and maggots in the nose often cause irritation, leading to increased nasal secretions, edema, foreign body sensation, pain, nosebleeds or foul-smelling runny nose, and may even cause fever. If left untreated, the larvae may penetrate deep into the brain and cause meningitis or even death.
