Founded in 1995, the International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989) commemorates the legendary pianist born and educated in Kyiv every two years. But in 2023, impossible to organize the competition in Ukraine because of the war. It therefore took up residence in Geneva, the headquarters of the World Federation of International Music Competitions.
On the shores of Lake Geneva, 28 international pianists carefully selected from 300 candidates have been competing since last Thursday. The competition has chosen to remain open to all participants regardless of their nationality. A Russian pianist and a Belarusian musician therefore participate in the competition, but all are asked to refrain from discussing the conflict.
Promote fair play
The nine-member international jury (see box) is chaired by Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits, who wants to promote fair play. “Today nothing is easy, but I think that the conditions of this competition are very fair. We gave everyone the opportunity to express themselves and that is important”, indicates the maestro to RTS .
For the Ukrainian pianist in competition Roman Fediurko, hosting the competition is a strong gesture on the part of Geneva. He sees it as “a sign of solidarity with Ukraine from the World Federation of International Music Competitions and probably from musicians around the world”.
Talking regarding Ukraine differently
Above all, the competition wants to let the music do the talking and give talented pianists the chance to practice their art. But it also offers the opportunity to talk regarding Ukraine differently. “When we say Ukraine, we think of war today. Here we have created another atmosphere, we are talking regarding Ukraine in another context”, continues Kirill Karabits.
The final of the Horowitz competition will take place on Friday at Victoria Hall in Geneva, in the presence of the Orchester de la Suisse romande and the Kyiv National Symphony Orchestra.
