Game News Horizon Forbidden West: initially too short, the loading times have been extended by the developers to help players

Released today on PS4 and PS5, Horizon Forbidden West is a success whatever the console. An optimization that was done upstream by Guerrilla, who encountered an unexpected problem.

Summary

  • Weak point: too strong
  • “Make the PS5 shine without putting the PS4 aside”

Weak point: too strong

PlayStation exclusive more than expected, Horizon : Forbidden West finally came out today. Since February 14, the opinions of the press have been known and generally go in the same direction: the title developed by Guerrilla Games is more than excellent, and succeeds almost perfectly in everything it does. Even from a technical point of view, Forbidden West is considered flawless whether on PlayStation 4 fat, PlayStation 4 Pro and PS5. Proof of this technical excellence, loading times that were too short on Sony’s latest version. It is Mathijs de Gong, director of the game, who evokes it in an interview:

Forbidden West’s fast travels on PS5 take much less time to load than on PS4. We had to add an option to leave the loading screen in place so that the player has time to read the short help sentences.

For the lucky ones who have already been able to play Forbidden West on PS5, they must know that you now have to press a button to pass the loading screen once it is finished.

“Make the PS5 shine without putting the PS4 aside”

For good reason, it is the SSD of the PlayStation 5 which makes data transfer more efficient. By comparison, the first installment takes a minute to teleport the player to where its sequel, on PS5, takes between four and five seconds. The component differences between the PS5 and the PS4 are substantial enough (the ps4 is entering its ninth year of existence): De Jong knew that it was going to be complicated to exploit the PS5 to the maximum to make it shine without putting PS4 players next to. A gap they were able to close because they had known regarding the PS5’s capabilities for a long time.. From then on, Guerrilla was able to act:

From the start, we wanted to have very faithful representations of the characters, environments and vegetation for the PS5. The models are different for the PS4 version, but the atmosphere remains the same along the adventure,

Overall, the adventure remains exceptional. JV, who rated the game 19/20, lists exemplary cross-gen work:

Despite a graphic rendering that necessarily changes from one version to another, the artistic direction of Guerrilla does not suffer more than that (…) Whether on PS5, PS4 Pro, PS4 Fat, this feeling of fascination and fear in the face of the huge metal carcasses remains intact, and stands out perfectly thanks to the different color schemes.

Regardless of the platform, Forbidden West seems like a must have and is one of the strong contenders for the much sought following title of Game of the Year. See you in December to find out.
