Hopium Machina: Is this car the hydrogen alternative to the Tesla?
The French start-up wants to mass-produce a fuel cell sedan by 2025. Can Hopium Overtake Tesla?
Hopium had already presented a first prototype of its fuel cell sedan announced for 2025 in 2021. With the Machina Vision, the first concept car now follows, which, in addition to new details on the exterior design, conveys concrete impressions of the interior for the first time. At the Paris Motor Show, which takes place from October 17th to 23rd, the series outlook is to celebrate its premiere.
Streamlined outer skin
The four-door sedan with a coupé-like roof line is characterized by a particularly smooth and therefore also very streamlined outer skin. Instead of large exterior mirrors, there are only small extensions for digital rear-view mirrors. In addition, there are no mechanical handles in the doors. The LED lights with a wave-like gradient are noticeable on the front. There is also a variable radiator grille, which should bring the fuel cell system to a comfortable temperature if necessary.
Inside, the Hopium offers a column-to-column display, the display size of which is variable. In order to reduce the size of the visible display, it is partially sunk into the dashboard. The start-up also promises a spacious rear with a glass panorama roof and high-quality materials.
The French had already given the first details regarding the drive in 2021. According to this, the vehicle should offer an electric drive with over 368 kW (500 hp) and thus be up to 230 km/h fast. According to its own statements, Hopium wants to become “the Tesla of hydrogen automobiles”. The hydrogen supply in the underfloor tanks should allow a range of more than 1000 kilometers with one filling. Hopium wants to go into industrial production in 2025, the price for the sedan is said to be around 120,000 euros.
