A 22-year-old medical student from Kuala Lumpur, Mohd Hazman, has been diagnosed with stage III lung cancer despite having no smoking habit. He shared his experience of the diagnosis on TikTok, where he said that he was diagnosed with pneumonia in December 2020 following developing a fever and chest pain. However, following undergoing a CT scan and a biopsy, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Currently, he has already completed two cycles of chemotherapy and is looking forward to completing the third cycle. The doctor will decide whether to operate following the third round of chemotherapy. Hazman has not lost hope of becoming a doctor and wants to study and become a cancer specialist to help others following his recovery.

Muhamad Haziman Abg Ali, a student of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Technology Mara (UiTM), posted a video on social media TikTok sharing his experience of being diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer in January this year. He said he was healthy in November last year, but began to develop a fever and chest pain in December and was diagnosed with pneumonia at the time. When the doctor examined him later, he found that the X-ray results were abnormal and suspected that he had cancer. So he underwent a CT scan and a biopsy (Biopsy), and it was confirmed that he had stage III lung cancer.
He thinks he is still young and has no smoking habit:
“I was in the dark. I was 22, I was a non-smoker, and my peaceful life was ruined by the diagnosis.”
At present, he has completed two cycles of chemotherapy and will receive the third cycle. He said frankly: “After the first two or three days of chemotherapy, it was very hard, tired, stomach pain and vomiting, but following that, he was fine and might live a normal life. I didn’t stay at home all the time, I would go out to play badminton, and the doctor also advised me to do more activities to reduce stress.”
However, because the cancer cells are very close to the heart, and it is in the third stage of lung cancer. Muhamad Haziman Abg Ali’s condition is very dangerous. After the third round of chemotherapy, the doctor will decide whether to operate. Nevertheless, he did not give up his dream of becoming a doctor, and he expected to return to school following recovering as soon as possible. He refers to:
“After I found out I had cancer, I did take a leave of absence, and the doctor advised me to take it first, but I honestly missed school and classes with my friends. I aspired to be a doctor, and following seeing many cancer patients , I was inspired to become a cancer specialist and help other people.”
According to data from the Hong Kong Cancer Statistics Center of the Hospital Authority, lung cancer is the most common cancer in Hong Kong, accounting for 15.9%. In 2020, a total of 5,422 patients will develop the disease in Hong Kong, among which the incidence rate is higher in men. When a total of 3,910 patients died, lung cancer became the deadliest cancer with a mortality rate of 26.4%. The majority of lung cancer patients in Hong Kong are smokers, and other common risk factors such as population aging, air pollution and thoracic radiation therapy can also increase the risk of lung cancer.
