hope for a vaccine for this dreaded brain cancer

The scientists from King’s College London have developed a vaccine to fight this brain cancer what is glioblastoma. This aggressive cancer mainly affects the brain cells and few treatments exist to reduce the size of the tumor. English researchers have developed a serumwhich teaches the immune system to recognize cancer cells.

A personalized treatment

The researchers in this study (source 1) developed a type of vaccine that is specific to each patient, by isolating special immune cells called dendritic cells, of their blood. Then, these cells received “biomarkers” from a tumor sample from the patient. Once this sample is recognized, these cells are in the ability to teach the immune system of the patient to recognize glioblastoma cells. Once the vaccine is injected, the immune system recognizes and therefore targets the “biomarkers” on the cancer cells.

A vaccine tested for years

Tested for eight years, this vaccine, called DCVax-Lhas been used on more than 300 patients from different countries with glioblastoma. All study participants received a standard treatment of this cancer, followed by radiotherapy…
