Hope Beyond Heartache: Vilnius Caritas Shelter Empowers 30 Families on the Road to Recovery

As Vilnius “Caritas” reported on Friday, in the new premises opened the day before on V. Grybo street, as before, expectant women and mothers with children will be provided with multi-faceted social and psychological assistance.

The Mother and Child Home will share the premises with the Pilgrim Center. The new houses are also equipped with children’s play areas and a green area, which ensures more comfort and coziness.

Eight mothers could live at the same time in the previous premises on Odminių street.

Vida Neverovič-Morkūnienė, head of the mother and child home, says that five years ago, the facility could accommodate about 40 people, now twice as many.

“Previously, mothers often needed help because of experiencing homelessness, and now almost 70 percent have their own home and seek help for other reasons: lack of social and parenting skills, domestic violence or addictions. The need for help is increasing – we need to expand, we need more such centers in Vilnius”, asserted V.Neverovič-Morkūnienė.

The Mother and Child Home is one of the first social service institutions in Lithuania, which has been operating for 27 years. This home is intended for women who, due to difficult life situations, lose their homes and cannot live with their families. The Mother and Child Home provides mothers with a safe environment and the opportunity to raise their children independently. A lot of attention is paid to the education of women, improving social and positive parenting skills.
