GUILDERLAND CENTER — The postgame gathering behind the Hoosick Falls field hockey team’s bench had coach Denise Campbell addressing her players. As the Panthers listened intently, their facial expressions gave off the impression they’d had an unsavory result.
In reality, the discussion did not involve a defeat, but what Campbell said was a less-than-stellar showing.
Hoosick Falls completely dominated North Salem in Class C state regional action as the Panthers posted a 4-0 victory at Guilderland High School. The Panthers (19-0) did not allow a shot or penalty corner during the first half and were never threatened once morest North Salem (14-5-1), the Section I champion.
“We have held ourselves to a higher standard and it did not seem like we performed on the field today,” Campbell said. “Maybe it is disappointing, but we have a few days to work on that and hopefully have a good showing once morest Rondout Valley.”
“We are always out here trying to play our best, but we can do a lot better than the way we played today,” Hoosick Falls senior midfielder Gwyn Vincent said. “It showed for a lot of us. As midfielders, we work hard and it gets frustrating if we are not connecting with our forwards.”
Campbell, a former star player at her alma mater, implored her charges followingward that their level of play needs to increase Sunday in a state quarterfinal contest at Section IX champion Rondout Valley.
Vincent, one of two seniors on the team along with midfielder MacKenna Roberson, tallied one goal and one assist in the win Wednesday. She said the team needs to return to the level of play displayed Sunday when the Panthers defeated Johnstown 3-0 for the program’s third straight sectional championship.
Sophomore star Tatum Hickey got things started for Hoosick Falls with the first of her two goals with 10:09 remaining in the opening quarter. Zoe James, also a sophomore, pushed the lead to 2-0 on a goal with 3:47 left in the first quarter. The Panthers led 2-0 at intermission, having outshot North Salem 15-0.
Hickey converted a feed from Vincent in the third quarter and Vincent tallied her goal in the final quarter to complete the scoring.
“She has a nice powerful shot,” Campbell said of Vincent.
Class B
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 3, Lakeland 2 (OT): Katie Lansley scored the game-winning goal with 5:43 remaining in the first overtime as the Spartans (18-1) advanced to the state quarterfinal round Sunday at Rondout Valley.
“This is so exciting. It is a dream come true,” said Lansley, a freshman. “Now we have a chance to go states.”
“The game might have gone either way,” BH-BL coach Kelly Vrooman said. “Lakeland came out strong and they must have watched film on us because they took some things away from us in how they played some or our very strong players. The girls finished this one off well.”
In overtime, the teams compete seven-on-seven. BH-BL, winner of 10 of the past 11 Section II Class B tournaments contested, survived a couple of dangerous moments to open the first extra session before Lansley scored.
“This was her first big goal, a game winner,” Vrooman said of Lansley. “She had a great game the last game ( once morest South Glens Falls). This was good for her.”
“I have been practicing putting myself in the perfect position. It finally paid off,” Lansley said.
