Who looks forward to the start of the new school year more than the students? – Right, their parents. The (too) long holidays make working parents, especially single parents, really sweat. Grandparents as holiday helpers are worth their weight in gold. Most of the teachers are also looking forward to the start of school. Their batteries are charged, anticipation and euphoria can be felt in every conference room.
Pupils, teachers, principals, cleaning staff and school caretakers – everyone has refueled. Positive vibes everywhere. When you enter the class, you as a teacher feel this positive energy, this joy of seeing you once more, this curiosity, this magical, expectant glow in the children’s eyes, this promising tingling. From now on, pupils and teachers will find themselves in the school, which is so valuable as an area of experience, communication and activity.
It’s not regarding assessment and grades. Not even close! School means primarily social learning, live and let live, generate happiness, do and grow together, be able to develop individually, etc. This requires educators with heart, brain, consistency and soul.
Teaching is one of the most demanding, responsible and demanding professions of all. What a privilege. He/She is allowed to work with young people, the most valuable in society, for several years in a process-like manner. Every day it is important to try to strengthen the self-esteem of the students, to hand over the kids to act independently, to help develop social skills and abilities and at the same time to convey attitude, interest, knowledge of life, attitude and manners unobtrusively. “You don’t need to try to educate children – they copy (almost) everything anyway.”
By the way, in more than 40 years of teaching I probably learn and benefit the most from my students.
With that in mind, Back to School – “Hooray, finally back to school!”
