A group of hooded individuals surrounded the building where Vice President Karin Herrera was participating in an academic event at the University of San Carlos (USAC) for approximately 10 minutes, in an event that the vice president described as intimidation.

The Vice Presidency of the Republic reported that Herrera was participating in the IX Congress of Biological Chemistry and when he was speaking, it was observed that hooded individuals surrounded the building and blocked the entrances and exits of the building.

They added that the vice president was there at the invitation of the Organization of Biological Chemistry Students, with whom she shared a presentation on the topic “beyond the microscope.”

“She was accompanied by her office secretaries, two advisors and the security staff that always attends all events; in addition to the communications team to share information about this academic event,” explained the Vice President.

For her part, Herrera posted X messages on her account related to the incident at Usac and reiterated that she was not intimidated.

“Without fear and with our heads held high, we continue our work guiding the young people who are the future of Guatemala. Intimidation does not stop us, we continue to move forward,” said Herrera on her social media.

There has been no official information yet on the reasons that motivated the hooded men to surround the building where Herrera was.

Furthermore, it has not been said whether it was determined whether the hooded individuals were students or whether they belonged to some outside group.

However, a source at the scene said they believe the hooded men were sent by a person named Pablo Oliva, as they are believed to be members of the Honorable Strike Committee and the so-called “Zopes.”

What SAAS says

For his part, Iván Carpio, head of SAAS, said that despite the presence of hooded individuals “there was no problem” and stressed that “everything developed normally.”

Carpió reiterated that the vice-presidency’s departure from the science and technology activity he attended was not limited.

He also said that the hooded men “were present, but did not restrict Herrera’s exit.”

Asked whether this was not considered a risk situation, he said that “safety studies are carried out for each activity.”
