Honoring the Luminaries of the 2024 Journalism Excellence Awards

MEXICO CITY.- The Inter-American Press Association (SIP) announced the winners of the 2024 Excellence in Journalism Awards.

In addition to the awards in 12 journalistic categories, there were 17 honorable mentions that recognized works from the Americas and Spain.

“The IAPA Awards Committee is impressed by the exceptional quality of the applications received this year,” said Maria Lorente, President of the SIP Awards Committee and Regional Director for Latin America of the Agence France Presse.

New categories for SIP journalism awards

This 2024, an award was given for the first time in the category “Journalism on migration Claudio Paolillo”.

Another of the new categories is the “Solutions Journalism”whose first issue was for Semanario Vanguardia of Mexico.

“We are proud of the valuable contribution of these journalists and media outlets that make a significant contribution to public knowledge, the vitality of democracy and the well-being of our societies,” said María Lorente.

This year’s winners include works by digital native media.

The case of a Nicaraguan journalist who was arbitrarily stripped of his nationality also stands out.

Los SIP Awards consist of a certificate of recognition and a remuneration of 2 thousand dollars.

The official presentation will take place during the 80th SIP General Assembly from October 17 to 20 in Cordoba, Argentina.

Winners of the 2024 Journalism Excellence Awards

The journalistic works recognized by the SIP this 2024, in 12 different categories are:

  • Caricature and Illustration Award: “Zombie Plague Drug”, Ezequiel Omar Garcia, Rolling Stone, Argentina

“For illustrating with originality and a high aesthetic sense the current scourge of drugs — a sensitive and complex subject — inspired by the classic painting by Pieter Brueghel.”

The honorable mention went to “Freedom of the Press”, Raúl Fernando Zuleta, The SpectatorColombia.

  • Current News Coverage Award: “Paper roads”, Redacción MetropolisesBrazil.

“For exposing, with a wealth of data, the disastrous use of public funds in Brazil through the public company Codevasf.”

Honorable mention for “#Narcofiles: Chapter Prosecutor’s Office (Mancera-Barbosa)”Writing Public QuestionColombia.

  • Claudio Paolillo Migration Journalism Award: “Nothing is impossible. The odyssey of a migrant from Venezuela to the US,” Editorial Agence France Presse.

“To be addressed, with mastery […] the human side of the Venezuelan catastrophe, which impacts all of Latin America.”

There were two honorable mentions: The universe in motion”, Writing Public EyePeru, and “Darién, the hell of migration” Duvan Alvarez From the rooms, The Weather, Colombia.

  • Alejandro Miró Quesada Garland Interview Award: “Tragedy of the Andes”, Editorial The NationArgentina.

“For shedding new light on the plane crash involving the Uruguayan rugby players in 1972. The testimonies of Fernando Parrado and Adolfo Strauch are profound accounts that raise the eternal conflict of man in extreme situations.”

With honorable mention to: “An agent exploited me at work, he wanted to make me believe that I was weak for being a woman (interview with soprano Nadine Sierra)” Ismael Monzon Tome, The SpanishSpain.

  • Chronicle Award: “The babies of Darien”, José E. Guarnizo Álvarez, MaelstromColombia.

“For revealing, with journalistic rigor, the tragedy of migrants, accompanied by children and babies, who cross the Darien to reach the United States.”

“For exposing, through a mini-documentary of high cinematographic quality and journalistic value, human rights violations linked to the Chinese fishing fleet and the global seafood industry.”

Honorable mentions for: “Who throws the boxes? The shocking images of pollution on Patagonian beaches and the maneuver that generates it”, Writing, The NationArgentina, and “Yaku Raymi: The Quechua ritual to save a glacier”, Last year’s TV y Mongabay LatamPeru.

  • Solutions Journalism Award: “Reforestation with drone: the pilot project that seeks to revive the Sierra de Arteaga”, Jesús Peña, Vanguard WeeklyMexico.

“To describe, through a magnificent narrative and adequate visual resources, how the peasant community of the state of Coahuila participates in […] the use of technology for environmental conservation.”

  • Opinion Award: “A year ago I was stripped of my Nicaraguan nationality,” Wilfredo Ernesto Miranda Aburto, The CountrySpain.

“For presenting, with clarity and solid arguments, the eloquent testimony of someone who has been illegally stripped of his nationality by the Daniel Ortega regime and condemned to exile.”

Honorable Mention: “Protests in Peru: The Patterns of Massacres” Rodrigo Salazar Zimmermann, Public EyePeru.

  • Data Journalism and Infographics Award: “Panorama of the favelas of Sao Paulo”, Redacción Mural AgencyBrazil.

“To contextualize, through an appropriate combination of text, photos and graphics, the terrible reality of the favelas of São Paulo.”

“For describing, through impressive research, the underworld of production, logistics, marketing and money laundering from the illegal circuit.”

  • Roberto Eisenmann Jr. Environmental Journalism Award: “Coverage of murders and threats against environmental activists”, Paul Tuesta, Luis Enrique Pérez, Leandro Amaya, SummonsPeru.

“For stating, through a convincing argument, supported by recent studies and data, the impunity of murders, attacks and threats against Peruvian environmentalists who have opposed deforestation in the Amazon for years.”

  • University Journalism Award: “Let’s talk about death”, Bárbara da Cunha Niedermeyer, HumanistBrazil.
