Almost a week following the accident during practice for Rally Croatia which cost the life of Craig Breen, Cyril Abiteboul spoke on Wednesday in Zagreb on the eve of the start of the event. The boss of Hyundai read a press release explaining in particular the circumstances of the accident and the tributes which will be paid to the Irish driver during this weekend.
Here is the translation of this press release, which the South Korean team also posted on its Twitter account:
“Craig was laid to rest yesterday and it was a very emotional day for all of us. Emotions are still very strong and there has been an immense outpouring of grief for him, who was an incredible person, as a competitor, teammate and friend. Regarding the accident, we can say that Craig was taking part in testing for the Rally Croatia. The conditions were slippery and the car came off the road at a relatively slow speed. She hit a wooden fence. A post from this fence entered the cockpit through the window on the driver’s side. The road was immediately closed and the medical team quickly arrived on the scene.
We must clarify that James Fulton (Breen’s teammate) was not injured in the accident, and our hearts go out to him. We are doing everything we can to support him. Craig was taken to hospital, but from what might be determined Craig died instantly.
Hyundai Motorsport and the FIA are working together to understand all aspects of the accident. According to the first findings, there were no problems with the car, the tires or the safety equipment. The local police wrote a report at the scene of the accident.
On our way to Croatia, it was clear to Craig’s family and friends, as well as the team members, that Craig would have wanted the rally to take place and his team members to participate.
We thought a lot regarding how to best honor Craig. We chose to take part in the rally with two cars, each sporting an Irish livery.
Craig was a wonderful person, as was his family and friends. The rally community gathered around him, it proves how much he was appreciated.
Several tributes will be paid to him this weekend. There is a book of condolences in our hospitality and everyone is welcome to come and sign it. It will be shared with his family. »
