Members of Brian Mulroney’s family came out touched and touched by the tributes offered to their father in parliament, a place where the former prime minister often had a hard time.
“For us, sitting on the balcony, listening to everyone talking so positively [de mon père]it probably wasn’t what he was used to, but he would have liked it and so would we. […] We can’t be more than grateful,” said Mark Mulroney, the third of four children, with a smirk.
The buried hatchet
Despite an acrimonious atmosphere that has become the norm in the Commons, MPs from all parties buried the hatchet for a little over an hour to honor the 18th Prime Minister.
Justin Trudeau opened the ball following a minute of silence where you might hear a pin drop.
“We say goodbye to the man, but not to his belief in putting country before politics […]», Launched the Prime Minister in a solemn tone.
“Proudly Quebecois, proudly bilingual, he never forgot where he came from,” said Mr. Trudeau. “He was always happy to shake everyone’s hand with the same enthusiasm, whether you were a worker or a monarch.”
Pierre Poilievre, in a speech punctuated with anecdotes and humor, highlighted Mr. Mulroney’s infinite memory, his attention to detail and his ability to cultivate his telephone contacts in order to carry out his political projects.
The Conservative leader praised at length the economic record of Mr. Mulroney, who paved the way for a “consensus of common sense, of free market, of free trade, of disciplined spending, of solid currency, of Strong Defense and meritocracy, not aristocracy.
A good advisor
MM. Trudeau and Poilievre said they benefited from the advice of the former Progressive Conservative leader, whom they each met at different times in their career.
Instead of its leader, the Bloc Québécois delegated MP Louis Plamondon, who sat alongside Mr. Mulroney, to pay tribute to the former prime minister.
Despite the gap that widened between the two men following the failure of the Meech Lake agreement and the creation of the Bloc Québécois, the dean of the House of Commons wanted to express all the respect he has for his former leader.
“Brian Mulroney deeply loved Canada, as he deeply loved Quebec. This was why he did everything to make Quebec feel at home. He gave everything, he tried everything to shape a better Canada, a true federation united in mutual respect and the celebration of its founding identities. What he tried, unfortunately, no one has tried since,” whispered the Bloc MP.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh touted Brian Mulroney’s legacy in defending “the culture, heritage and distinct society of Quebecers as an integral part of the country.”
