Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge proposed honoring the legend Franz Beckenbauer, who died yesterday, Sunday, at the age of 78, by providing a memorial service at the Allianz Arena, the stronghold of the Bavarian club, while another legend, Berti Vogts, suggested naming the German Cup following the “Kaiser.” ” In the future.
Rummenigge, who played alongside Beckenbauer at Bayern Munich before serving as the club’s CEO, told Bild newspaper on Tuesday: “Bayern owes the Kaiser a decent honoring ceremony.”
He added, “The entire football world and more offer their condolences on the death of our friend Franz. Bayern should organize a memorial service for him at the stadium, which would not have been established without him.”
The German Football Association confirmed that it will consult with the Beckenbauer family and Bayern Munich regarding the appropriate tribute to the late legend, but talks in this regard will not begin until following the end of the mourning period.
The German Football Association did not comment on the proposal to name the German Cup following Beckenbauer, which was a proposal issued by Vogts, who won the World Cup with Beckenbauer in 1974 and succeeded him as coach of the German national team in 1990.
Vogts told the newspaper “Rheinische Post”: “It is important that his name is not forgotten by the next generation of football players. Perhaps the German Football Association should consider naming the German Cup following Franz Beckenbauer, for example.”
Beckenbauer joined Bayern Munich as a young player and quickly became a pivotal player in the Bavarian club, with whom he won four Bundesliga titles, three European titles, an Intercontinental Cup title, and four German Cup titles.
Beckenbauer played alongside the Brazilian legend Pele in the New York Cosmos club, where he played professionally for two years before returning to Germany through Hamburg, but he ended his busy career following another short professional trip in the Cosmos in 1993.
A year later, Beckenbauer became coach of the German national team, and following losing the final match of the 1986 World Cup to Argentina, led by its star, the late legend Diego Maradona, Beckenbauer returned to lead his country to win the 1990 World Cup by defeating Argentina as well.
Beckenbauer temporarily coached Bayern Munich. He also served as club president between 1994 and 2009 and as head of the organizing committee for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
