The reading ability of Hong Kong primary and secondary school students ranked second among the 43 participating countries or regions. The top three in the world, second only to Singapore. However, students’ engagement in reading class is only second to last in the world. According to some scholars’ analysis, Hong Kong students may not have the leisure to cultivate their interest in reading in the face of heavy homework.

The “Global Students’ Reading Ability Progress Study 2021” is sponsored by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, and is conducted every five years to evaluate, compare and track the native language reading ability of primary four students around the world. The results of the study show that the overall reading score of Hong Kong students is 573 points, which is much higher than the international average score of 500 points, which is one place higher than that of the previous year, ranking second only to Singapore’s 587 points.

92% of students read at or above the Intermediate International Benchmark, which is higher than the global average of 75%. 21% achieved the highest benchmark level, ‘reading top’ or above, an increase of 3 percentage points from 2016, compared with a global average of 7% of students achieving this level.

Under the epidemic, reading ability does not decline but rises

The University of Hong Kong pointed out that the research results show that the primary four students in Hong Kong still have enough reading resilience under the epidemic, and have not regressed due to the impact of the epidemic. In addition, 60% of the families will provide books for extra learning to help improve their reading skills, and their grades will naturally be good. . Compared with other countries or regions, the socioeconomic status of Hong Kong families has no significant impact on students’ reading performance. The HKU Index shows the fairness of reading in Hong Kong.

However, the reading engagement level of Hong Kong students hovers at a low level, ranking 56th, the second lowest in the world, lower than neighboring regions Taiwan (44th), Singapore (45th) and Macau (50th).

Scholars: Hong Kong students are hard-pressed to cultivate interest

Chung Chu-mei, an assistant professor at the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong, analyzed that classroom teaching is urgent, and it may be difficult for teachers to hold interactive activities to drive students into reading. However, the Education Bureau has adjusted flexible class hours in recent years, which is believed to help improve. She also believes that Hong Kong students may not have the leisure time to cultivate their interest in reading due to their heavy academic workload. Moreover, the school requires students to write a large number of reading reports, which may make them feel bored and stressed.

In addition, studies have shown that girls in Primary 4 in Hong Kong perform better in reading than boys, and their performance in information reading is better than that in literature and art. The study also found that the higher the students’ reading confidence, the better their reading performance. The University of Hong Kong suggested that all stakeholders in the society should help provide a friendly pre-school literacy environment to further improve the reading level in Hong Kong. It also believes that “building a reading family is indispensable”, and parents should also set an example and do a good job in teaching and teaching.

According to the Education Bureau, face-to-face classes in Hong Kong schools are intermittently suspended due to the epidemic. Schools flexibly use different models to support students to continue reading and learning at home, achieving “suspension of classes without learning”, which will help Hong Kong students maintain excellent reading skills.
