If you like natural yogurt in the morning, here’s a healthy reason to add a spoonful honey! According to two new studies from the University of Illinois (United States), this strengthens the probiotic properties of the latter.

The team which studied the association of these two foods, commonly associated in the Mediterranean diet, noticed that the combination of honey and yogurt promotes the survival of probiotic yogurt bacteria in the intestine.

By studying four different types of honey (alfalfa, buckwheat, clover and orange blossom), researchers noticed that clover honey (Trifolium) was the most effective to support the survival of probiotics in the intestinal phase of digestion. In a clinical trial carried out on 66 adults, the consumption of yogurt with clover honey once again showed these results (without however modifying the transit of the participants who were, as the researchers note, already in perfect health).

The researchers then conducted a smaller follow-up study with 36 participants who ate a third food, yogurt with sugar. Again, the combination of yogurt, alone, with honey is the one that preserved the most probiotics.

A healthy microbiota is associated with better health parameters, a tablespoon of honey in your morning yogurt would therefore be a good solution to pamper your intestines. Future clinical trials carried out on people with digestive disorders will certainly tell us more about the impact of this action on our health.
