A national security emergency is being declared in the Central American country of Honduras. The government has announced the temporary suspension of constitutional rights in two major cities controlled by criminal groups.

A national security emergency is imposed for 30 days. Tegucigalpa, the poorest areas of the capital, and the northern city of San Pedro Sula will be under a state of security from Tuesday. The move is part of President Xiomara Castro’s plan to tackle violent gangs.

“A national security emergency will be in effect for thirty days from Tuesday, December 6 to promote orderly operations of economic development, investment, commerce and public spaces,” the country’s security secretariat said in a statement.
