“President Xiomara Castro visited the president of the New BRICS Development Bank, Dilma Roussef, in Shanghai, who formally received the application for Honduras to join the organization. In the next few days a government Technical Commission will travel to start the process” , published the Honduran Press Secretary on Twitter.

Founded in 2015 by the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), the NDB subsequently added three new members —Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates in 2021 and Egypt in 2023— and is in the process of formalizing Uruguay’s accession .

Former Brazilian President Dilma Roussef assumed the leadership of that entity in mid-April, which, according to the current leader of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is on its way to becoming “the big bank of the Global South”.
