Honda has relaunched its Motocompo concept with the electric scooter folding Motocompacto. This scooter is aimed at the lucrative student mobility market in certain regions.
Do you remember the Honda Motocompo? It was a cute little folding scooter, designed for easy storage in the back of a small sedan. Honda is currently paying homage to this nostalgic epic dating from the 80s with a baptized electric version.
Motocompacto, Honda’s futuristic electric scooter from the past
In 1980, the Honda brand attempted to market a small gasoline scooter called Compact motorcycle. The idea was simple. This scooter might fit in the trunk of a Honda city car. This way, drivers might park outside of congested cities and then ride their unfolded scooter into the city center. However, the product did not meet with the expected success and, following a few years, Honda stopped production of the Motocompo.
Now, Honda is reviving the scooter with a new compact and futuristic design, the Motocompacto. This suitcase-shaped folding scooter is designed to fit in the back of the Honda City subcompact car. It looks like its predecessor. It’s perfect for navigating cityscapes and college campuses.
In addition, this Honda folding electric scooter is equipped with front and rear lights, a charge indicator and a digital speedometer. It also has a limited storage space and the scooter’s settings can be changed via Bluetooth and a smartphone app. The scooter’s charger can be stored on board for easy charging on the go. It also features a welded steel loop on the kickstand, which helps lock it in securely.
Honda plans to launch a line of accessoriesincluding a helmet, backpack and clothing, for those who want to personalize their folding scooter.
An alternative to the electric scooter
As its technical characteristics indicate, the Motocompacto constitutes a transport solution for the last kilometer.
The clever folding concept quickly transforms the scooter into a compact and stackable suitcase. Folded, it measures just 29.2 x 21.1 x 3.7 inches, making it easy to store and transport. The whole bike weighs only 18.7 kg and has a gross load capacity of 120 kg. Large adults can therefore easily put a leg over it.
An affordable folding electric scooter
Unlike the previous Motocompo, which was powered by a two-stroke gasoline engine, the new Honda Motocompacto uses electric power. He uses a 490 W permanent magnet motor direct drive. This motor produces a torque of 16 Nm and can reach a top speed of just 24 km/h. In addition, a 6.8 Ah battery offers maximum range of 19 km and can be recharged in 3.5 hours via a 110 volt outlet. The electric scooter can be recharged from a regular 110 volt outlet in just 3.5 hours whether folded or unfolded.
The Honda Motocompacto will be available from November 2023 at a price “under $995”.
