Homophobic chants during US victory in Nations League final

The referee stopped the game in Arlington, Texas several times in the final phase following Mexican fans started shouting. The USA won the game 2-0 with goals from Tyler Adams (45th) and Giovanni Reyna (63rd).

The Continental Association for North and Central America and the Caribbean said it condemned the discriminatory chants. The security personnel in the stadium identified a large number of fans involved and brought them out of the arena. After Reyna’s goal, the celebrating US team was hit by things thrown onto the field. “We want a great atmosphere, but we don’t want things being thrown at us. That’s dangerous, someone might get hurt,” said coach Gregg Berhalter.

CONCACAF initially did not announce any disciplinary measures following the game was interrupted. “It is extremely disappointing that this matter continues to be an issue in some games, especially in the context that in two years there will be an enormous opportunity to further grow the sport in our region,” the association said. The USA, Mexico and Canada will host the 2026 event
