The LGBTI community is on the alert
This case adds to the more than 500 incidents of violence reported against the LGBT+ community in the city in 2024a year marked by alarming numbers of physical and psychological attacks. The community asks for justice, and the case becomes a turning point to question the effectiveness of the authorities and the protection of human rights in Colombia.
The victim expressed that the physical pain was outweighed by the emotional pain of seeing her partner held down and forced to watch helplessly.
This event adds to the worrying statistics of violence against the LGBT+ population in Colombia. During the first half of 2024, the Ombudsman’s Office attended to 286 cases of violence against people of diverse sexual orientation and gender identity, with 27% of them related to physical violence.
