Volos – After heat waves, drought and forest fires – it is raining more than ever in Greece. Storm “Daniel” hits regions in the middle of Greece with full force. The National Weather Service meteo.gr reports record rainfall.
Record rainfall in Greece
Zagora on Mount Pelion (Thessaly) recorded over 700 liters of rain per square meter until 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday (September 6th) alone. The consequences of the severe storm in Greece are devastating. There is a state of emergency in some regions. Electricity and drinking water supplies have collapsed in the port city of Volos. People have to be rescued with inflatable boats. Villages are being evacuated. On the island of Skiathos, British holidaymakers had to spend the night at the airport. An end to the storms is not in sight until Thursday (September 7th). Then the weather situation should improve.
In Turkey, Istanbul was hit by heavy rain on Wednesday night. At least two people have died in floods. Several have been injured. (ml)
