Homemade teacher shortage | SN.at

Despite a wave of retirements and an acute shortage of teachers, the duration of teacher training courses has been enormously extended. While it used to take six semesters (PädAk) to become a primary school teacher or middle school teacher or nine semesters to become a high school teacher or upper school teacher (master’s degree – teaching qualification), today you have to plan for at least twelve semesters (eight semesters of Bachelor’s and four semesters of Master’s are compulsory). What makes matters worse is that if you study in Linz, you have to take seminars at several universities in Salzburg and Upper Austria. In times of climate change, students are sent from Salzburg to Linz and back once more every week without any concerns. This network of several universities is called a cluster and is disastrously organized. Keyword bureaucracy! Even educators who have already completed a master’s degree in teaching and want to study a third subject as part of an extension course are faced with such big obstacles that one has to talk regarding rocks. For example, you are forced to take a course “Introduction to Scientific Work” even though you have already written a diploma thesis and therefore have a master’s degree. In addition, in many cases the Latinum from your old course of study is not credited and you are not only forced to take another exam, but also to take a one-year course with compulsory attendance. In addition, there are complex internships, even though you have been teaching for years. The political response to the shortage of teachers is to bring students into school, often in their first year of study, as well as the widespread use of career changers who work as teachers without any pedagogical training. The presence of career changers in schools is fundamentally very positive, but the steadily increasing number of career changers is in stark contrast to the high quality of training propagated by universities by extending the duration of training.
