Miami, Dec 24 (EFE).- The Florida authorities opened shelters this Saturday in areas of this state in the southeastern United States for the homeless due to the unusual drop in temperatures, which in towns in the northern area such as Ocala dropped up to 5 degrees Celsius below zero.

The so-called sunshine state, which usually registers summer temperatures throughout the year, was surprised this weekend by a wave of arctic cold that affects a large part of the United States with snowstorms and is also felt in Florida , especially in the north.

Local officials, faced with nighttime temperatures forecast to drop below 0 degrees in counties like Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough, decided to open shelters over the holiday weekend.

The National Meteorological Service expects that the temperatures registered during these Christmas days will be the coldest in the region in almost three decades.

The great storm that is affecting a good part of the United States has already caused hundreds of delays and numerous cancellations of flights at Miami International Airport (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, the two most important in South Florida. EFE
