The severe storm caused massive damage in Kassel on Thursday. Commuter traffic on Friday morning ran with restrictions. Our ticker on Friday.
+++ 12.20 p.m.: The garbage disposal will in all likelihood be used as planned, says Dirk Stochla, head of the fire protection department. Starting next week there will be an extended range of bulky waste collection options, and the recycling centers will also remain open a little longer on Saturdays, until 2 p.m.
+++ 12.16 p.m.: According to the journeyman, no trains are currently stopping at Wilhelmshöhe station.
+++ 12.15 p.m.: Water also entered the clinic in Kassel, but according to Geselle, the care of the patients might be maintained. Some daycare centers suffered severe damage.
+++ 12.13 p.m.: The control center had 1045 calls, 476 operations were recorded. According to Mayor Christian Geselle, around 50 missions are still running. He thanks all the emergency services – the full-time employees as well as the volunteers. From the fire brigade, 460 forces were deployed.

+++ 12.11 p.m.: The oral Abitur took place, otherwise, according to the journeyman, the schools would remain closed, as would the daycare centers. This is also due to the unsafe situation of the road conditions. There was damage to some municipal facilities. Public transport was also temporarily suspended.
+++ 12.09 p.m.: Christian Geselle reports on the amount of precipitation: it was 100 milliliters per hour, otherwise 45 milliliters per hour is usual in storms of the century. There were a few slightly injured, but “thank God” no serious injuries, as he says. Some buildings are unusable.
+++ 12.05 p.m.: The press conference begins. Lord Mayor Christian Geselle is present, as is Head of Fire Protection Dirk Stochla and Tobias Winter as head of Kassel’s professional fire brigade and his deputy Thomas Schmidt.
+++ 11.56 a.m.: In the parking garage in the atrium at the ICE train station, the water was half a meter high on Friday. The employees are still trying to get the area dry with water squeegees and other equipment. House inspector Jürgen Kerl says: “That was the third time in 25 years.”

+++ 11.16 a.m.: The storm also affected the operation of Kassel’s outdoor pools. It looks “really wild” in the water, according to Ingo Pijanka, spokesman for the municipal works. The employees are busy fishing the undergrowth out of the water. This work has already been done in the Wilhelmshöhe outdoor pool. The pool opened at 10 a.m., three hours late. The Harleshausen outdoor pool and the outdoor area of the Auebad should open at lunchtime. Otherwise the damage is minimal.
+++ 11.07 a.m.: The Wehlheiden youth rooms at Graefestraße 8 were under water because of the storm and will have to remain closed for the next week because all of the furniture is damaged. This was announced by the outpatient youth welfare service in Kassel. The water is being pumped out and the clean-up work is underway.
+++ 10.54 a.m.: At the rain measuring stations in Kasselwasser, up to 50 millimeters of rain were measured in 30 minutes during the storm. For comparison: In a heavy rain event, which statistically only occurs every 100 years, 45 millimeters of rain fall in 60 minutes. This shows how heavy the rainfall was.
According to the spokesman for Kasselwasser, the precipitation corresponded to level 7 of 12 on the heavy rain index. From level 6, sewage systems are no longer able to absorb the water masses. A particular problem in Kassel on Thursday was the debris that had clogged hundreds of street drains. Seven teams from Kasselwasser were out into the night to clear the drains of branches and leaves.
Problematic areas included “Unter den Drei Brücken”, the IC train station, the Federal Social Court and the Platz der Deutschen Unity. Rivers and streams have not burst their banks. The flooded streets were solely caused by the surface water. There were also no problems in the sewage treatment plant absorbing the water volumes.
+++ 10.33 a.m.: Normally the street at Karlsaue looks a bit like Copenhagen in the morning. Countless cyclists are on the road. Nobody drives here on Friday morning. That’s understandable: It’s raining, the wind is blowing, and the city has strongly recommended avoiding parks. Trees might still fall over. In fact, several trees have snapped on the edge of the Karlsaue.
An ancient oak got it, and just before the orangery there is a huge tree in the middle of the cobblestones. It’s hard to get through here. And it is life-threatening – even if the lake landscape on the edge of the Little Fulda actually looks pretty nice. Usually you go for a walk there. Today you might only get here by boat.

+++ 10.06 a.m.: The city schools and daycare centers remain closed, as does the district of Kassel. However, some of the private facilities are open. The Hallenbar Vellmar will not open this Friday. It is also warned once morest entering the parks because trees can still break off.
+++ 8.30 a.m.: After the severe storm on Thursday followingnoon, there were restrictions here and there in rush hour traffic on Friday morning. The Obervellmarer Straße between Harleshausen and Vellmar, for example, was closed due to a fallen tree.
However, the city announced that the tree had been removed and the road was clear once more. Parts of the underpass at the ICE train station, which connects Hessbergstrasse and Bertha-von-Suttner-Strasse, were also unusable. The route from Habichtswald-Ehlen over the Hohe Gras to Kassel is closed.

Buses and trains of the Kasseler Verkehrsgesellschaft drove once more – however, the driving operations were further restricted; there were delays. This also has to do with the fact that many trains stopped on the open route on Friday and might not move into the depot.
In the evening, for example, a long line of trams had formed in front of Wilhelmshöhe station. Train traffic is also currently affected. The schools and city daycare centers in Kassel remained closed. However, the oral Abitur examinations should take place.
The city has announced a press conference for noon today to provide information on the current situation. The Old Town Festival is to take place, as is the White Night in the Bergpark. The live ticker from Thursday evening can be found here.
