(Quebec) Like beneficiary attendants, the Legault government is launching accelerated, paid training to recruit 1,000 home support workers by the fall.

Published yesterday at 9:44 a.m.

Claiming to continue its shift towards home support, the Coalition Avenir Québec government is deploying a shortened training of 705 hours (rather than 870 hours) which will extend over five months to train auxiliaries in health and social services (ASSS) .

A scholarship of $12,000 will be offered to each student in exchange for a commitment to work for six months in the health and social services network. Two payments of $4,000 will be made during training and must be reimbursed if it is incomplete. A final amount of $4,000 will be paid upon obtaining the certificate of professional studies.

Quebec offers a job guarantee upon obtaining their certification.

The training will be offered throughout Quebec in professional training centers.

“We think that the first cohorts will be set up very quickly, so that from the fall, we will feel the difference in the home support teams,” argued the Minister for Health and Seniors on Tuesday, Sonia Bélanger.

“As we have seen, there is an urgent need to act in home support services in Quebec. Our home support services have been weakened for several years,” she recalled.

It is possible to register now by visiting the Quebec.ca website.

New CAQ offensive

This is a new offensive by the Legault government to alleviate the labor shortage. In the midst of a pandemic, Prime Minister François Legault caused a surprise by launching accelerated training to train 10,000 beneficiary attendants. Some 7,900 attendants trained at the time are still employed in the health network.

The training was relaunched last May to train 3,000 additional agents. These workers can only work in seniors’ homes and CHSLDs.

The government did it once more last fall by launching short training courses in the construction industry. The programs also come with scholarships, but no employment obligation followingwards. Mr. Legault has already made known his intention to renew them.
