The computer cannot replace everything. 200 teaching units of practice are still firmly anchored in the home help course. But from October 10th everything will be a little easier. At least in theory.
Because from then on, part of the training is possible anytime and anywhere. The state’s care school for the elderly has been working intensively on the digitization of its training in recent months. The result is unique in Austria: from the autumn, 124 of the 220 theoretical teaching units will be held online in the form of e-learning. 48 units are to be completed in self-study. A further 48 theoretical units take place in face-to-face classes in order to perfect what has previously been practiced.
As a digital pilot, home help is deliberately in the starting position. Because since the beginning of 2023 there has been the possibility to hire the new professional group of support staff in the old people’s and nursing homes. However, the support staff, who can start without any previous nursing knowledge, undertake to complete further training in nursing within two years. Half of this training can be completed during service. Support staff accounts for up to ten percent of the workforce, that is more than 500 men and women.
Regular operation according to pilot
The aim of the pilot project is for digital training to become part of regular operations and to be expanded to other job profiles. The start will be in Linz, the modular training will then be extended to the Gaspoltshofen site. The job profiles of home help, nursing assistance and specialist social care are then no longer trained separately, but started together in one course.
Registration for the course, which will last until the beginning of May 2024 and in which up to 35 people can take part, is now possible. “We attach particular importance to the fact that training content is taught in a practical manner. Wherever possible, however, we want to be more flexible,” says Wilma Steinbacher, director of the school for the care of the elderly.
Social Provincial Councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (VP) wants to make the career entry into nursing with this model “as low as possible”.
