A Home Depot in upstate New York has deployed a guard dog to protect customers from aggressive thieves and some migrants who disturb customers in the store’s parking lot.

This is what the New York Post reported. Last Tuesday, two men wearing bulletproof vests were accompanied by a German shepherd while patrolling the Home Depot located in New Rochelle, regarding 30 kilometers north of New York City.

“It’s to ensure presence in the sector,” said one of the men. It’s not like we’re letting them bite anyone or anything.”

“It’s not just because of migrants that we got hired, but also because of several other things, like people breaking into cars.”

When the journalist from Dagbladet Big Apple visited, it was quiet in the area. About ten miles away, however, at another Home Depot located in the Bronx, there were regarding thirty people loitering outside the store.

Home Depot often receives complaints from customers related to the theft of cellphones or purses, according to an employee.

“You go out and you’re a single woman, they literally jump on your bandwagon,” she said. One time I came to work and there must have been a hundred men loitering around.”

Home Depot spokeswoman Margaret Smith said the company prohibits loitering and solicitation in its stores and regularly works with law enforcement. She did not specify the security measures in place.
