Hitler’s Handmaidens

It is common to ignore the role of women in the rise of Nazi Germany – and a four-part British docu-series will try to change that. Through the presentation of some of the women who were around Hitler, it becomes clear how significant their support was for him, the Nazi party and the horrors of the Holocaust. In fact, the Nazis might not have been able to carry out their extermination policy without the support of some wealthy and influential women who willingly cooperated with them.

Contract with the devil?

Avida Livni’s film reveals a story that was silenced for 91 years: in August 1933, the heads of the Zionist Organization signed “transfer agreements” with Nazi Germany. As part of the agreement, about 60,000 Jews with a lot of property will arrive in the Land of Israel. Is it permissible to make a “contract with the devil” to save people?

with your head up

News 13 journalist Gil Tamri recounts the story of the rescue of 366 children in France – which is almost never told to this day. The one who took it upon herself to save the children was Sheta Simon, one of the leaders of the Hebrew Scouts in France, who forged connections with the local authorities that allowed her to protect those hundreds of children even during the Nazi raids. In the film, Tamri returns to the children’s home founded by Simone, along with some of the children who lived there.

The reply from the other planet

In his new film, director Assaf Lapid deals with the complex and enigmatic character of K. Chetnik, the Holocaust author who sold millions of copies and shaped the awareness of the Holocaust in Israel – and presents for the first time an unknown chapter in his life.

In the 1970s, when he was 67 years old, K. Chetnik underwent experimental treatment with LSD. This treatment led to a new book and new conclusions about the Holocaust and the responsibility of humans. The film examines the process that went through and the question of why this book did not sell like its predecessors, and did not find its place in the memory of the Holocaust in Israel.

Nathan-ism

For 70 years now, Nathan Hilo has not been able to stop painting. At the age of 90, he is flooded with memories of the days when he was sent, as an American soldier, to guard the senior Nazis who were on trial at Nuremberg, so that they would not commit suicide before their sentencing. In Ilan Golod’s documentary, Hilo recreates his conversations with Albert Shafar, the prolonged kiss between Goering and his wife – and also the words he said to each of the accused before he led them to the gallows.
