LOS ANGELES> Hollywood’s writers went on strike for the first time in 15 years as studio giants rejected a long-standing demand for wage reform. Thousands of Hollywood TV and film screenwriters have gone on strike since Monday night following final talks with studio bosses failed. 98 percent (more than nine thousand members) of the Writers Guild of America went on strike. With this, late night live chat shows on American televisions were also suspended. Upcoming movies will also be affected. The agitators will stage a sit-in in front of the studios. In 2007, the 100-day writers’ strike cost the Hollywood film industry an estimated $2 billion. The Writers Guild’s main demand is that the writers should also get a share of the profits generated by the online display of entertainment programs. It also demands that artificial intelligence technology be avoided in screenwriting. The giants, including Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, Walt Disney, Warner Bros. and Netflix, are strongly opposed to these demands. The Writers Guild said the strike began following six weeks of negotiations failed to reach a resolution. Read on deshabhimani.com
