Violet Campbell (VC): Thank you for having me. It was indeed a shockwave. We went from jubilant celebration to stunned silence, then quickly into dismay and defiance. It was as if a funnel cloud had descended on the industry, uprooting the expectation that Hillary Clinton would become our first female president. The outpouring of emotion was raw and palpable.

A: And that emotion translated into public declarations and actions, wiht some contemplating exile. How did these ‘exodus threats’ play out?

VC: Well, they were mostly just that – threats. Few carried through, but the sentiment highlighted the extreme distress felt by many. Cher’s “I’m outta here!” and Barbra Streisand’s fear of Trump’s America sparked a moment, but moving abroad isn’t easy. They,along with Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres,did seem to spend more time overseas,but to describe it as exile is a stretch.

A: speaking of scomparing into controversy, several artists performed at Trump’s inauguration. Wasn’t that seen as controversial?

VC: Absolutely. The industry was mostly unified in opposition to Trump, so when artists like Carrie underwood and even more so, Snoop Dogg, performed at the inauguration, it ruffled feathers.Underwood’s reasoning – honoring the presidency – made sense to some, but Snoop’s involvement, given his past criticisms, was seen as hypocritical by many.

A: Did Trump’s presidency ultimately unite or divide Hollywood further?

VC: Both. It united the industry in its defiance, with many using their platforms to oppose Trump’s policies, support causes they believed in, and force national conversations. However, it also exposed deep political divisions. The mosaic of political opinions in Hollywood, previously hidden, was suddenly on full display, causing friction and rifts.

A: Have these divisions prevailed post-Trump or healed over time?

VC: Some have healed, yes. The urgency of resistance subsided post-Trump, and the industry found common ground in issues like diversity, representation, and social justice.
