The news quickly went viral and various Hollywood personalities spoke out, in addition to showing their support for the possible candidacy of current Vice President Kamala Harris and asking their followers to vote for her.

“I wholeheartedly support Joe Biden and his decision to step back and fully endorse Kamala Harris. She is trustworthy and valid and is a strong advocate for the rights of women and people of color,” wrote Jamie Lee Curtis (Freaky Friday), one of the first artists to react to Biden’s resignation letter.

Actresses Yvette Nicole Brown (Community) and Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary) also called for a vote for Harris on their social media following the US president’s decision to refuse re-election.

Actor Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things) called on Democratic voters to take action: “It’s time to take action. No to Trump/Vance. No to the right-wing Christian religion taking over our nation,” he wrote on social media.

Mark Hamill, known for playing Luke Skywalker in the saga of Star Wars He thanked Biden for “a record of accomplishment unmatched by any president” and added that it is now up to patriotic Americans to “elect the Democrat who will honor and advance his legacy.”

Actress and singer Barbra Streisand (Funny Girl) supported Biden’s decision to step aside, saying he had made “significant achievements” during his four-year administration.

Oscar winner and Billie Eilish’s brother Finneas posted a photo of his family alongside Biden and wrote: “I see a person who puts people before himself and his pride today, and for that I have enormous respect.”

Minutes before the US president resigned, American singer Cher said that, despite loving Biden since she met him in 2008 and having campaigned for his candidacy, “it is time to pass the baton.”

After hearing the news, he urged the Democratic Party to “think outside the box. Winning is everything.”

Film director Aaron Sorkin, creator of The West Wing, also announced his resignation ahead of schedule: he published an opinion piece in The New York Times in which he called on Democrats to nominate Republican Senator Mitt Romney as their candidate for the White House.

“Nominating Romney would be a clear demonstration that what we say is what we really want: a clear and forceful demonstration that this election is not regarding what our elections are usually regarding, but regarding preventing a deranged man from taking power,” he said.
