Today July 27th Saint Panteleimon celebrates according to our Church!
Saint Panteleimon (Panteleon the first name) came from Nicomedia in Asia Minor and lived during the years of Maximian (286 – 305 AD). His father was Efstorgios, who was ethnic and after the admonitions of his son became a Christian.
His mother was Evvouli, who came from a Christian family (see March 30). He was educated in medicine by Euphrosyne and was indoctrinated in the Christian faith and baptized by the elder Ermolaos (see July 26) who was a priest of the Church of Nicomedia.
At one point, when a viper bit a young man and practically killed him, Saint Panteleimon, invoking Christ, resurrected him.
The occasion of his martyrdom was another miracle of the Saint. He had once healed a blind man, who reported the fact of his healing to the king, telling him that Panteleon had healed him in the name of Christ, in whom he himself now believed. The king having heard him, immediately ordered and they beheaded him. Panteleon himself was brought before the king, who ordered his torture for the purpose of denying his faith.
The Saint was severely tortured in various ways, but he did not succumb to the pressures after the Lord appeared before him in the form of his spiritual Ermolaus and gave him courage. Finally his beheading was ordered and then a voice was heard from heaven calling him not as Panteleon but as Panteleimon.
But as soon as the executioner stretched out his hand to cut off the Saint’s head with his sword, the sword bent and the iron melted like wax. Faced with such a miracle, the soldiers present also became Christians. Then the Saint voluntarily gave himself up to martyrdom. It is said that from his wound flowed not blood but milk, and the olive tree to which he had been tied suddenly bore fruit.
