Calendar – Who are celebrating today October 19: Today, our holy Church honors the memory of the Prophet Joel, whose name means “love of the Lord”, and of Saint John the miracle worker, who asceticized on Mount Rila in Bulgaria and founded there the Holy Monastery of the same name. We also honor the memory of Saint Mnason, bishop of Tamasos, who was a disciple of the Apostles and successor of Saint Herakleides.
Coming from a pagan family, Saint Mnasonas embraced Christianity after a meeting he had in Rome with some of the seventy Apostles. Burning with divine zeal, he went to Jerusalem where he met the apostles Peter and John and received their blessing.
Such was the esteem that the early Church had for him, that the evangelist Luke, in the Acts of the Apostles, calls him an “ancient disciple”, noting that the apostle Paul and other apostles had been hosted in his house.
In the area of Tamasos, Mnasonas, initially practiced in a cave together with his teacher Heraklidios, and, as a faithful student, later helped him in spreading the Gospel. When, by the grace of God, Heraclidius foresaw the end of his earthly life, he ordained Mnasona to the bishopric of Tamasea, which he pastored by teaching and working miracles, until the end of his life, while, shortly before his death, he appointed as his successor Rodon.
We should mention that in 2007, after eight centuries, during the reign of Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Cyprus, the diocese of Tamasos was reconstituted into one of the new Metropolises of our Palaifata Apostolic Church.
