Calendar – Who is celebrating today, November 8: Archangels Michael Gabriel Taxiarches
Today our Church celebrates the Synaxin of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel and the other Incorporeal and Heavenly Angelic Orders.
According to the Holy Bible, angels are sent by God in a visible form (angels are invisible good spirits close to God) in important historical circumstances, when some great divine will is to be manifested or executed.
~To the Archangel Michael.
God bless you, Michael, I pray for you
You must be, but I don’t have material.
To the Archangel Gabriel.
Hail Gabriel Angel of great joy,
In mala I rejoice and fly so I desire.~
The relationship, now, that angels have with God and people, as well as their mission, we also see in the Holy Bible. And especially, in Psalms 33, v. 8 and 90, verse 10-12, and in the New Testament, Matt. th’ verse 10, as well as in the letter to the Hebrews, ch. first verse 14, where the author exclaims: “do not all liturgical spirits sent to ministry for those to come inherit salvation?”. That is, are not all angels ministering spirits, who act not of their own initiative, but are sent by God to minister to those who are to inherit eternal life?
At the head of the angelic forces are the archangels Michael and Gabriel. Michael is found in the Old Testament. B.C. when Abraham is about to sacrifice Isaac, to Joshua, to Elijah, to Lot, to save him when God decided to destroy Gomorrah, to the Patriarch Jacob, to the seer Barlaam and others. Michael was also the one who led the people of Israel to escape from Egypt. Gabriel is found in the New Testament, as in the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and others. In memory, then, of the missions and the work performed by the angels, our Church designated the feast of November 8.

**Interview with Father Alexios on the Synaxis of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel**
**Host:** Welcome, Father Alexios. Today, we celebrate the Synaxis of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Can you explain the significance of this day in the Church?
**Father Alexios:** Thank you for having me. The Synaxis of the Archangels is a significant feast in the Orthodox Church that honors the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, along with all the heavenly angelic orders. It’s a day to reflect on the roles these angels play as messengers of God and protectors of humanity.
**Host:** It’s fascinating to think about the role of angels. The Bible describes angels as sent by God during crucial moments in history. Can you elaborate on their missions?
**Father Alexios:** Absolutely. Angels are indeed messengers and servants of God. They appear at pivotal moments to deliver divine messages or to intervene in human affairs. For example, Michael, presented as a warrior and protector, has helped God’s people in times of crisis, while Gabriel is known as a messenger of joy, notably announcing the birth of Christ to the Virgin Mary.
**Host:** You mentioned Michael’s protective role in the Old Testament and Gabriel’s joyful announcements in the New Testament. How do these roles reflect their importance in our faith?
**Father Alexios:** Their roles embody both strength and compassion. Michael represents God’s might and is often invoked for protection against evil, while Gabriel brings hope and glad tidings. Together, they exemplify how God works through various means to guide and support His people, showing that divine assistance can come in many forms.
**Host:** That’s insightful. The relationship between angels and humanity is emphasized in several biblical passages. Can you share why that connection matters for believers today?
**Father Alexios:** Certainly. The angels, as ministering spirits, remind us that God is attentive to our needs. In a world filled with challenges, knowing that we have heavenly beings interceding on our behalf can be a source of comfort and strength for believers. It reinforces our faith in God’s continuous presence and His willingness to help us through our struggles.
**Host:** Thank you, Father Alexios, for sharing your thoughts on the significance of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Any final words for our listeners as they celebrate today?
**Father Alexios:** I encourage everyone to seek the intercession of the Archangels in their lives. Let us remember to express gratitude for their presence and guidance, and may we find solace in knowing that we are never alone in our journey of faith.
**Host:** Thank you again for your insights, Father. Happy Feast Day to all our listeners celebrating the Archangels!
