According to the Road Safety Commission, during the first quarter of 2023, at least one person died daily in traffic accidents in Holguín.
The data offered by the Holguin commission revealed that between January and March there were at least two accidents a day and the same number of injuries.
This shows that the number of traffic accidents increased if this time of the previous year is taken as a reference.
What are the main causes of road accidents?
According to the Holguin newspaper “Ahora”, among the main causes identified is not respecting the right of way and the lack of control of the vehicle. They are joined by the most common of all: dangerous speeding.
Only in the provincial capital, 135 accidents, seven deaths and 136 injuries were registered; this being the territory with the worst statistics in the province. In this sense, it is followed by the municipalities of Rafael Freyre, Mayarí, Báguanos, Moa and Antilla.
The so-called electric motorcycles or “motorinas” were involved in 44 accidents with one death and 15 injured. However, cars and motorcycles were the vehicles most involved in accidents.
A striking fact is that the vehicles that are most involved in traffic accidents in Holguín are state vehicles (128 accidents). Meanwhile, private means of transport were only linked to 53 accidents.
With such a panorama in Holguín, the Provincial Road Safety Commission called for the responsibility of drivers and pedestrians. This in order to reduce the number of accidents and save lives.
In Cuba, despite the fact that there is a law that punishes road offenders, the numbers of car accidents are increasing.
Drivers, for their part, point to the poor quality of the roads, traffic signs and the condition of the vehicles. Of which many do not comply with modern security measures.
Thus, 2022 was a year that provided extremely alarming figures. Throughout the country, there were 9,848 accidents, 700 deaths and 7,689 injuries.
