Authorities in Bangladesh on Monday accused a container store investor of failing to inform firefighters of the presence of chemicals when they came to the site on Saturday night to put out a fire that caused a massive explosion that killed at least 49 people, including nine firefighters.
The fire broke out on Saturday at about 21:30 (1530 GMT) in a special warehouse in Sitaconda, which contains about 4,000 containers, located about 40 km from the main port of Chittagong in the southeast of the country.
Hundreds of firefighters were immediately sent to the site to put out the blaze that engulfed several containers filled with chemicals, causing a massive explosion an hour later, the fire service said.
At least 49 people were killed, and more than 300 were injured.
Ten wounded people were taken in critical condition by plane for treatment in the capital, Dhaka.
The chief medical officer in the region, Elias Chaudhry, said that doctors from their holidays in several hospitals were called to help treat hundreds of wounded.
Relatives of the missing and dead gathered at the hospital, waiting for DNA samples to be given to identify the victims.
Nine firefighters died in the fire, and two are still missing, according to authorities.
