Available since last February on Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PC, Hogwarts Legacy was released last week on PS4 and Xbox One without Warner ever showing the game. We were then worried regarding how the title would turn out on PS4 and especially on Xbox One, and Digital Foundry’s analysis now gives a better idea of the state of the game on old-gen consoles.
Big compromises on Xbox One
First, the experts compared the Xbox One S version of Hogwarts Legacy to its Xbox Series S version. Unsurprisingly, compromises are made for the game to run on Xbox One S, and we notice in particular quite easily less varied textures and of lower quality.
The loading of these is also quite slow on Xbox One, since it sometimes happens that they appear only following 10 seconds. Vegetation density and draw distance are also reduced.
We also notice a degradation of shadows and certain lighting effects, while the environments are generally less detailed and have fewer objects in the scenes on the Xbox One version compared to the Series S version.
In terms of image resolution, the game runs at 720p upscaled via the FSR 1; Digital Foundry concludes that despite these big compromises, the end result isn’t all that bad.
Comparison with PlayStation consoles
In comparison, the PS4 version displays the same graphic compromises, but offers a higher image resolution in 900p, also upscaled via FSR 1. Sony’s console also offers better management of shadows and ambient occlusion and suffers less hassle with texture popping than Xbox One and even Xbox One X.
The latter, on the other hand, displays an image resolution of 1440p, when the PS4 Pro runs at 1080p.
Digital Foundry, on the other hand, points out longer loading times on Xbox One X and display bugs specific to the Microsoft console.
Satisfactory performance on Xbox One X and PS4 Pro
As for the framerate, the game aims for 30 FPS on all 4 supports. The Xbox One and PS4 versions, on the other hand, struggle to maintain this frequency and drop punctually in dense scenes such as fights.
In comparison, the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro have a generally more stable framerate at 30 FPS. Drops are also possible, but they are less severe than on Xbox One and PS4.
As is the case on Xbox Series X | S and PS5, an option to unlock the framerate is available, but it is not really usable.
Below is the full analysis from Digital Foundry. Remember that Hogwarts Legacy is now available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, PS4, PS5 and PC. The Nintendo Switch version is expected later this year.
