A defining figure of the National Hockey League is no longer with us. Guy Lafleur has died at the age of 70. The Canadian, also known as “The Flower” because of his last name, won the Stanley Cup five times with the Montreal Canadiens in the 1970s. He died Friday in a palliative care hospital following a three-year battle with cancer.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of Guy Lafleur’s death,” said Canadiens owner Geoff Molson. “Everyone at the club is devastated. He was one of the greatest players in our club and at the same time an exceptional ambassador for our sport.”
Among the top 100 NHL players in history
Lafleur was one of the most exciting players of his time. The Canadian scored at least 50 goals in each season from 1974/75 to 1979/80. He was twice voted MVP (1977 and 1978). “You didn’t have to see Guy Lafleur’s name and number on his jersey to know The Flower had the puck on his stick,” said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
The former NHL star was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988 and was named one of the top 100 NHL players in history in 2017. (SDA/nab)
