Overview of Canada’s players in the 2021 NHL Draft – from Owen Power to Taylor Makar
After another successful NHL Draft, one thing remains clear – no other country develops hockey players like Canada.
In total, more than a third of the players who have heard their names called up for this virtual draft – 89 out of 223 – come from the country of the maple leaf. (That number includes players who were born outside the country but grew up in the Canadian hockey system, such as the third overall pick, Mason McTavish.)
This is a huge increase from last October’s 73 selections in the 2020 draft.
These hockey players represent ten members of Hockey Canada and 49 have already worn the colors of Canada in international competition. Eighteen of them are gold medalists from the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championship.
From the first choice of the auction, red and white was in the spotlight. The Buffalo Sabers have set their sights on 2021 IIHF World Championship gold medalist Owen Power. The Mississauga, Ont., native is only the second Canadian defenseman to be selected at the top level since 1996, following Aaron Ekblad (2014).
From Mississauga, Ontario, to the 1st choice of the #NHL Draft of 2021, Owen Power attributes achieving his dreams to the support of his family.

McTavish was claimed shortly following him when the Anaheim Ducks called his name at No. 3. He was the first of eight World U18 gold medalists who were chosen in the first round. The others were Brandt Clarke (8e par Los Angeles), Dylan
Guenther (9e par Arizona), Brennan Othmann (16e by the New York Rangers), Wyatt Johnston (23e par Dallas), Corson Ceulemans (25e par Columbus), Chase Stillman (29 e by New Jersey) and Nolan Allan (32e par Chicago).
Eighteen of the 31 first-round picks are Canadians. (Arizona had to give up its first-round selection on 11e rung). This is the second highest number since the draft became an event in 1990 giving players from all over the world access to a single pick from the record set last year.
The Canadian Hockey League (CHL) was well represented among the Canadian delegation; 77 of the 89 players selected – including 15 of the 18 first-round picks – are products of 46 CHL teams. The Western Hockey League distinguished itself with 32
selections, followed by the Ontario Hockey League with 23 and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with 22.
The Western Hockey League was the leading provider of talent during the 2021 #NHLDraftwith 33 players selected.
