The Hochkönig may be the highest, but the Dientner mountains opposite are the greenest.

There is no question that the Hochkönig is a majestic sight. However, it is also quite unapproachable, especially on its rocky south side. The Dientner Grasberge to the south are made of a different rock. Fertile alpine pastures and family-friendly ski runs in winter dominate in the Schieferalpen.

The Hochkönig stays at a distance, but is without a doubt the optical salt in the prospect soup. This is a wonderful place to hike, with enjoyment on the one hand and high-performance mountain sports on the other. This time the pure hiking pleasure wins, from the Dientner Saddle it is just 500 meters in altitude and there are also three beautiful alpine pastures along the way to visit.

The first Alm, the Dientalm with its huge adventure playground (closed on Thursdays), is less than a five-minute walk from the starting point at Dientner Sattel (1379 metres). Path 75, which leads past here in the direction of the Tiergartenalm, has a few puzzles to solve for the little visitors and the opportunity for the big ones to switch to the steeper forest path (on the right). You can see that the Tiergartenalm is a popular après-ski hut in winter, but it is nevertheless surrounded by many alpine animals (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). Our path 76 follows the wide piste in the direction of Kollmannsegg, which will soon be refined by a beautiful cotton grass meadow. The mountain station remains on the right, the reservoir on the left, then there are two variants to choose from: either over the Kollmannsegg (1848 meters) or, a little shorter, across the east flank without much loss of altitude. Reunited, both variants run over a short counter climb to a fork in the road. The path leads straight ahead to the Schneeberg (1921 metres) or before that to the Schneebergkreuz (1939 metres), but our return path 75 branches off to the left down the valley in the direction of the Klingelbergalm (1543 metres). This magnificently situated alpine pasture is also managed (closed on Wednesdays). Then the round closes once more at the Tiergartenalm, the last section of the Almrunde follows the already known path.
