It was revealed that Chung Ho-young, a candidate for Minister of Health and Welfare (pictured), purchased farmland in Gumi-si, North Gyeongsang Province, which is suspected of cultivating by proxy, through disguised transfer in the 1980s.

According to the personnel hearing materials submitted by Candidate Jeong, he moved from Jung-gu, Daegu to his uncle’s house in Sandong-eup, Gumi-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do in February 1987, during his second year of majoring in surgery at Kyungpook National University Hospital. And regarding a month later, in his own name, he purchased a total of 3679m² of paddy fields and fields in Sandong-eup, Gumi-si. Then, in July of the same year, he moved to Daegu once more.

It is pointed out that candidate Chung violated both the Farmland Act and the Resident Registration Act 35 years ago. In 1987, when candidate Chung purchased the land, there were restrictions on the ‘control distance’ that allowed him to purchase farmland within 4km of his address. The house where candidate Chung temporarily changed his address and the farmland he purchased are regarding 100m apart. The official price of the land was 660 million won last year.

On the 20th, a representative of the candidate Chung’s personnel hearing preparation team explained, “At the time, my descendant, who was the owner of the land, immigrated for economic reasons and requested that the land be urgently purchased.” Meanwhile, floor leader Kwon Seong-dong of People’s Power said on the same day, “We will do the same verification from the perspective of the people.”

On KBS Radio that day, floor leader Kwon said, “We will hold a personnel hearing and a public debate regarding it, and a national evaluation will come out.” will,” he emphasized.

President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol is also sticking to the existing position of having candidate Jeong be evaluated at the personnel hearing. However, as concerns regarding the adverse impact on the June 1 local elections if the appointment of candidate Chung were forced to pass through various channels, the internal atmosphere is changing slightly. It is reported that Yoon-elect’s side is considering alternatives, including those who entered the final candidates for the Minister of Health and Welfare, in preparation for the possibility that Chung would be dropped out.
