Dresden researchers find new approach to AIDS

Special molecules prevent the HI virus from multiplying in the body. This is what researchers from Dresden, the USA and Italy found out. This not only opens up opportunities against AIDS.

Around 2,000 people in Germany are newly infected with HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus, every year. According to information from the Robert Koch Institute, a good 91,000 people in Germany were living with it at the end of 2021. At the same time, there were almost 40 million people worldwide. The virus infects certain cells in the immune system that are important in fighting off disease. It enters these cells, multiplies in them and ultimately destroys them. The immune system is declining more and more, the body becomes more susceptible to diseases. Scientists from the TU Dresden and colleagues from the USA are now showing how the virus penetrates the cells – and found a way to prevent it from multiplying. Opportunities for new therapies.
