The incident occurred on a Friday evening around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Beck Avenue. Reports indicate that Leyda was crossing within a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a Toyota Corolla traveling westbound on Victory Boulevard. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter.

Witnesses described the aftermath as heart-wrenching. “I saw the aftermath,” said local resident Brenda Galdamez. “It’s really heavy. It’s something you can’t know until you see it. It’s heartbreaking, and not knowing who it was until they confirm it was even scarier.”

Following the incident, the abandoned Corolla was discovered along the curb on Victory Boulevard, east of Troost Avenue. Police have released limited information about the suspect, stating only that he is a man in his 50s who fled the scene on foot without identifying himself or providing aid, as required by law.

The Medina family released a heartfelt statement, emphasizing Leyda’s role as a loving wife, daughter, sister, and friend. “Leyda was not only a loving wife, but an amazing daughter, sister, tía, and friend,” they shared. “She was a lover of all things Halloween, running, and doing hair/make-up. As her family grieves, they are seeking the community’s help to identify the driver responsible for this senseless act. If anyone witnessed the incident, please come forward.”
