The ‘Concachampions’ lived its last edition with the current format and we review the six finals between teams from Mexico and the United States.

The 2023 edition was the last club competition of the concacaf which was disputed under the name of the ‘Concacaf Champions League‘. There were 15 tournaments that were held, of which six were defined in finals between clubs from the Liga MX and of the MLSwhere the Mexican teams prevailed five times, for only one that the United States squads got.

The name of the ‘Concacaf Champions League‘ premiered in the 2008/2009 season to replace the ‘Concacaf Champions Cup’, but on Tuesday the new format that will have the club competition from 2024.

The teams of the Liga MX they dominated the tournament under the name ‘Concacaf Champions League‘, with 14 titles for Mexican clubs, for only one for the United States, including nine of the 15 finals that were played, were between Aztec squads.

The first final between teams of the Liga MX y MLS occurred in the 2010/2011 season, in which Monterrey beat Real Salt Lake with a score of 3-2, in what was also the first title of concacaf for the Rayados.

América and Montreal Impact met for the title of the 2014/2015 edition. They tied 1-1 in the first leg that was held at the Azteca Stadium, but in the second leg, played in Canada, the Águilas won 2-4 to close the aggregate at 3-5.

In 2018, already under another competition format, in which there was no group stage, only direct elimination brackets, Chivas achieved its second championship in the concacaf following beating Toronto on penalties by a score of 4-2.

The 2020 edition had to be modified from the quarterfinals due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The series were played in a single game, without round-trip duels. Under this format, Tigres beat LAFC 2-1.

The mastery of the Liga MX in concacaf ended in 2022. Seattle Sounders defeated Pumas 5-2 on aggregate, in what was the only final in which a club from the MLS beat a Mexican for the confederation title.

This Sunday the last final of the Concacaf Champions League. León beat LAFC 3-1 to win their first confederation title, having been runners-up in 1993.

Next Tuesday, June 6, the concacaf will present the new club competition that will replace the ‘Concacaf Champions League‘.
