An exceptional outcome was undoubtedly needed for a women’s pole vault competition which was absolutely beautiful. Katie Moon and Nina Kennedy, in perfect equality following having both cleared 4.90m on their third attempt and then missed 4.95m, decided to share the gold medal this Wednesday evening at the World Championships in Budapest.
This is a great first in the history of the competition.
After exchanging a few words to confirm their decision, the American and the Australian fell into each other’s arms, overwhelmed with emotion.

This situation is obviously reminiscent of that experienced during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, by high jumpers Mutaz Essa Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi, both crowned following a brief meeting with the referee.

In Budapest, Nina Kennedy (26), who we saw at work this summer in Belgium at the Heusden meeting, won her first major title following winning the bronze medal last year at Eugene. Yesterday she added 8cm to her old personal best.
