Historic defeat for England, on the brink of elimination from the World Cup race

South Africa on Saturday defeated England by 229 runs in an ODI World Cup match in Mumbai, a record loss in ODIs.

England, who have won just once in the opening three matches of the event, are on the brink of exiting the World Cup today after suffering a crushing defeat against South Africa.

England still have five matches to go, but a loss in one more match would put them far out of the race for the semi-finals.

It was England’s heaviest ODI defeat since their 221-run defeat against Australia in Melbourne in 2002.

England captain Jos Buttler won the toss today and elected to bowl first, with Quinton de Kock getting out on the second ball of the match, but the innings reversed after that.

Reza Hendricks scored 85 runs off 75 balls and Rosse Vander Dusen scored 60 runs off 61 balls to give the team a good start.

Skipper Aiden Markram scored 42 runs off 44 balls, David Miller was out for just five runs.

The South African team managed to score 399 runs for the loss of seven wickets.

England’s batsmen entered the field with a target of 400 runs, but eight wickets had fallen to 100 runs.

Mark Wood, batting at number ten, top scored with 43 off 17 balls and remained not out, while Gus Atkinson at number nine scored 35 off 21 balls.

The England team could score just 170 runs in 22 overs.
