How Samsung Knox has evolved to protect billions of users around the world and how the company is ushering in a new era of device security
Samsung Knox, Samsung Electronics’ security platform, is completing 10 years! Named following one of the most watched places in the world, the solution was first presented at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2013.
It’s a decade of global mobile protection for people everywhere, and Samsung Knox has evolved into a holistic security platform, synonymous with the protection of billions of people and companies. Now, Samsung is tackling the next frontier of device security with Knox Matrix.
Bringing security to an increasingly connected world
Knox Matrix is Samsung’s vision for a future where connected devices in an ecosystem can protect each other – as well as the people who use them. It’s a comprehensive approach to security that will become increasingly essential as more devices and aspects of our lives become connected.
Many people around the world already own a variety of connected devices – from smartphones and TVs to refrigerators and robot vacuum cleaners. In the presence of over 14 billion connected devices on the market demonstrates the vastness of this scenario, which shows no signs of diminishing.
Samsung is aware that despite the benefits, increased connectivity has the potential to lead to more cyber-attacks. Traditional security infrastructure, which protects individual devices, will not be able to keep up with new developments, as a breached device has the chance to impact others within the same ecosystem. Knox Matrix will address this challenge through a revolutionary concept that paves the way for multi-device security for mobile phones, TVs, home appliances and more.
Samsung devices enabled with Knox Matrix work to protect each other on a trusted network. If an element is breached, the Knox Matrix will isolate it from the ecosystem to protect the others. Knox Matrix support across all devices can effectively turn a smart home into a smart shield – the more devices a person connects, the more protective barriers they have.
Currently, there are three critical features of Knox Matrix that guarantee its success. O Trust Chain relies on devices monitoring each other for threats. O Credential Sync protects the person’s information as data is moved between devices. And the Cross Platform SDK will allow devices on multiple operating systems and platforms (including but not limited to Android, Tizen and Windows) to join Knox Matrix with consistent security standards. That way, we can keep devices secure even in a hyper-connected world.
Knox Matrix manages it all within one blockchain private, allowing compatible devices to check each other for breaches and ensure security with intelligent threat monitoring. With these steps in place and more features to come, people will be able to enjoy multiple connected devices securely and conveniently.
The Journey to the Next Frontier: Stronger Together
Laying the foundation for the next era of device security requires careful consideration. Knox Matrix development is steadily moving forward, but there are challenges on the way to the next frontier. This includes reconciling many different types of products, with varying operating systems and security standards, into a frictionless system capable of uniquely functioning.
As devices become more connected, Samsung must also ensure that they are not more complicated to use. With Knox Matrix, we’re working to give people transparency and choice along with protection. People should be confident that they can make informed decisions regarding their devices so that they can be protected without difficulty. We anticipate that Knox Matrix will alert users to potentially unsafe situations such as the use of firmware old, offering suggestions for next steps.
The power of Knox Matrix to protect connected ecosystems will be demonstrated in phases, starting with Samsung Galaxy products such as smartphones and tablets. Knox Matrix compatible models will be available starting in 2024, initially with the three main features mentioned above and further functionality to be made available through updates. This will expand to cover Samsung home appliances over the next two to three years, followed by partner devices. Partner device compatibility development is already underway.
A trusted record of safe innovations
Samsung already has a long history of allowing different types of devices to work interconnected through SmartThings. In line with the company’s philosophy of open collaboration, Samsung has also been working closely with the industry’s most trusted partners and the broader security community to define and expand security standards, and remove flaws before they become problematic. Greater vision, greater understanding, better solutions. This background serves as a fundamental foundation for all Samsung Galaxy devices, along with real-time protection and threat detection built into every layer of their products.
Knox Matrix is just the latest development in the groundbreaking story of Samsung Knox security. Samsung recently introduced the Knox Vault1an essential security solution that isolates people’s most sensitive data to ensure it never falls into the wrong hands.
Previous evolutions have included TrustZone2, which provided a secure environment within the core operating system to run sensitive applications and processes separately from regular software. This way, work and play can safely coexist on the same device.
Samsung Knox has also evolved into the Knox Suite3 to help leading companies and institutions around the world efficiently secure, deploy and manage their fleet of devices with customizable software and easy, secure management.
On the merits of this formidable track record, we are confident that Samsung Knox is best positioned to define the next era of device security. Connected technology will help us live with better experiences – and greater connectivity doesn’t necessarily mean more risk. With Samsung Knox, Samsung is laying the foundation for a safer tomorrow to be stronger together.
1 Knox Vault is compatible with select Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets, such as the Galaxy S21 and the following smartphones from the Galaxy S and Z Fold lines. Know more:
